Shop With Your Cops is a community policing initiative led by the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office and the SJCSO Foundation, in collaboration with other local law enforcement agencies. This program focuses on rebuilding relationships between law enforcement and children who have experienced stressful situations involving the police, such as domestic violence incidents. These challenging encounters can leave a lasting impact on children, potentially fostering negative perceptions of law enforcement.
Shop With Your Cops takes a proactive approach to mend these relationships, targeting children between the ages of 2 and 15, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds. Referrals for participation come from various community partners and law enforcement agencies.
Every December, children are invited to join this heartwarming event at Target, where they embark on a delightful shopping spree alongside an officer or deputy. Each child is provided with a budget of $125 to select toys and clothing items, which is made possible through generous community donations.
During the event, children not only shop but also enjoy a hearty breakfast and quality time with a deputy, culminating in a Christmas experience that they may not have otherwise. Witnessing these children leaving the store with beaming smiles, receiving warm hugs from law enforcement officers, and clutching bags full of clothes and toys is truly heartwarming.

The Reserve Deputy Program is a vital component of the law enforcement community, allowing dedicated individuals to volunteer their time and expertise to support the San Juan County Sheriff's Office in maintaining public safety and upholding the law. Reserve deputies are essentially volunteer law enforcement officers who have undergone specialized training and meet the same high standards as full-time deputies. These dedicated individuals play a crucial role in enhancing the capabilities and resources of the Sheriff's Office, serving as an invaluable extension of the regular law enforcement force.
The funding for this program, made possible through the San Juan County Sheriff's Office Foundation, ensures that reserve deputies have access to necessary resources, training, and equipment. To outfit a new Reserve Deputy with all necessary equipment and training needed, the cost is $7000 per deputy. By partnering with the foundation, your donations allow the Sheriff's Office can continue to provide opportunities for civic-minded individuals to serve their community and contribute to its overall well-being.
